PTC Student Breaks Traditions

Pioneer Technology Center welding student, Rikki Cole, uses an oxyfuel track torch to cut a bevel on a piece of material. Cole, the only female in the welding class, has taken on the leadership roles of class secretary,

Rikki Cole is far from the average 17-year-old girl. During this school year, this young woman has managed to perform at Oklahoma’s Centennial Rodeo Opry while developing her skills as a "hot shot" welder at Pioneer Technology Center.

Cole is a senior at Braman High School and the only female enrolled in PTC’s welding program, but it doesn’t faze her or her classmates. According to Cole, "All women should be able to do what men do. I was told that I shouldn’t take welding, but I am hard-headed. So that’s one reason I got started."

Cole’s original interest in the trade was a result of her dad’s skill. She said that a career in welding would be following in her dad’s footsteps and she didn’t shy away from the money making potential in the field either. In addition, the fact that women are a minority to the welding industry inspired Cole to rise to the challenge.

"Women can do whatever they want" is one of Cole’s mantras which have given her the courage to take risks. Whether in an arena, on stage, or in the welding shop, Cole takes charge. She serves as the welding class secretary, assistant safety foreman and assistant shop foreman; she reigned as the All-Around Rodeo Champion with the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association for two consecutive years; and she captivates audiences with her country singing.

Cole’s aspirations include a move to "Music City," Nashville, Tennessee. "Within the next year, I want to be in Nashville. Talent scouts are looking at me. I’ll have to make a living though, so I’m glad I can weld," said Cole. According to Cole, country artists like Little Texas and Garth Brooks are reviewing her CDs. She is excited about the exposure and dreams about being a country music superstar, but is realistic enough to make sure she has the right skills to survive while she reaches for the stars.
