Pioneer Technology Center’s (PTC) board of education voted to implement two new programs developed by Project Lead The Way, Inc. (PLTW) during the October 9 board meeting. The two new programs are Pre-Engineering and Biomedical Sciences. Students will be able to enroll in either program for the 2008-2009 school year.
Project Lead The Way, Inc. was founded over ten years ago and is now considered the nation’s leader in pre-engineering curricula to high schools. According to the National Academies’ report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, PLTW models teaching excellence with world-class curricula and standards. According to PTC instructional director, Steve Ketchum, “We are excited to add these high quality programs to our program mix. They will enhance the student’s core curriculum tremendously and at the same time provide advanced knowledge for our future workforce.”
Specifically, the biomedical sciences program combines math, science, and technology in hands-on, real-world learning experiences to build a foundation for expertise in human and animal life. The biomedical course offerings will include: principles of biomedical sciences, human body systems, medical intervention and biomedical research. A sampling of possible careers for a biomedical science student might include being a doctor, dentist, medical technologist, biomedical engineer, ultrasound technician, nurse, veterinarian, paramedic, pharmaceutical scientist or dietician. “The biomedical program will enhance our health careers and nursing programs, and at the same time give us an additional edge in fighting the healthcare workforce crisis.” stated Arlene Stauffer, PTC instructional director for the program.
The pre-engineering program also uses applied instruction to make science and math relevant to students. Program learning is designed to be reality-based and hands-on. The cutting edge pre-engineering curriculum includes foundation courses such as introduction to engineering design, principles of engineering and digital electronics. Students will follow up their foundational training with specialized curriculum in aerospace engineering, biotechnical engineering, civil engineering and architecture, and computer integrated manufacturing.
“It’s great to work at a place that puts so much value on innovation and industry. The two new Project Lead The Way programs will provide tremendous educational opportunities for our youth. And the community and industry will benefit by continuing to receive members of a workforce with a diverse range of skills and knowledge.” stated Dennis Ruttman, director of Pioneer Tech’s business and industry services.
