The walls are going up and soon the roof on the handicapped accessible cabins at Camp McFadden on the west shore of Kaw Lake in northcentral Oklahoma.
Funded in part by the AMBUCS with the help of the Northern Oklahoma Development Authority (NODA), the cabins will include two bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities in the middle. The cabins are being constructed by students of the Pioneer Tech Construction Technology program under the direction of instructor Allen Stolhand. They are donating the labor and constructing the cabins.
Right now the students are working to enclose the cabin prior to winter, but there has been one hitch. The project is going to cost more than originally anticipated. Project chairman John Sutton reported they still need to raise another $15,000 to finish the cabins by this spring for use starting the summer of 2008.
“The AMBUCS have worked with NODA and the camp to make these cabins a reality,” said project chairman John Sutton, a member of AMBUCS and the Camp McFadden Inc. board. NODA has donated $14,000 to the AMBUCS on a reimbursement method since construction began. In addition the AMBUCS have made considerable financial donations to the project. However, without the many donations and discounts extended by local businesses it would have easily cost at least twice that much.
“Once they’re complete the cabins will have heat and air and be available to rent 365 days a year to anyone,” said Sutton. “One advantage is that they will be the only handicapped accessible cabins on Kaw Lake.”
Upon completion the cabins will be for rent through Camp McFadden Inc. both to handicapped and non-handicapped individuals.
