Pioneer Technology Center (PTC) kicked off this school year’s Character First initiative by observing Constitution Day with their students during the September Character Assembly. The students were given a live theatrical history lesson by local businessmen who played the roles of some of northern Oklahoma’s forefathers: Ponca City’s first mayor, B.S. Barnes portrayed by Phil Bandy; Ponca City oilman and Oklahoma Governor, E.W. Marland portrayed by Mike Mott; 101 rancher, Zach Miller portrayed by the John Raley; and oilman/steel man, William (Bill) McFadden portrayed by Tim Burg.
The forefathers gave a dramatic view of what life was like in Ponca City before and during statehood. They brought to life how Ponca City and northern Oklahoma was developed and how the area transitioned through the oil booms of early 1900’s. According to Steve Ketchum, PTC instructional director, “The presentation gave the students a better understanding of northern Oklahoma communities: who, what, when and how the area was developed into what we know today. It’s a great opportunity for our students to ask questions about our history, and ultimately connect with their community.”
Also, as part of PTC’s Constitution Day, the school’s instructional directors presented September’s character trait of “dependability.” At the end of the assembly’s events, each student was asked to sign Pioneer Tech’s Character Constitution as a sign of commitment to character development.
